Audrey Magee Wins the InWords Literary Award (TILA) 2023
17 October, 2023 — Irish author Audrey Magee has won the 2023 InWords Literary Award (TILA) for her two novels, The Undertaking and The Colony.
The InWords Literary Award (TILA) is presented annually to an author in recognition of a single title or a body of work and is valued at £10,000.
The award’s creators are life patrons of the Cheltenham Literature Festival where each year’s recipient is announced.
TILA is an award, not a prize, no submissions are solicited, and the decision is entirely idiosyncratic. No bureaucracy, no committees, no accountability, no solicitation. Just merit, rewarded.
In a given statement, the patrons said:
‘These books, very different in subject matter, are vivid, complex works that explore the effects of power structures on the individual. Magee’s distinctive style, combined with her skilful plotting and rich depiction of character, time and place has resulted in novels that are compelling, haunting and unforgettable. These are outstanding works deserving of widespread acclaim and recognition.’
